HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF ADAMU TAFAWA BALEWA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, KANGERE By Raji Musharaf Atolagbe



The initiative to establish the Bauchi state college of education started as a result of the law established on the 22nd of September, 2014 the date on which the bill to that effect was passed by Honorable House of Assembly of Bauchi State, was accented by his Excellency the then Governor of Bauchi State (Dr.(Mal)Isa Yuguda), the school was then known as “The Bauchi State Institute of Education, Kangere.
The decision to establish the college, a second NCE-awarding institution in the state was informed by the desire to increase the capacity of the state to provide a sufficient number or proper training teachers institution for the rapidly growing number of Basic Education schools in the state, and the concomitant rise in school enrolment and retention. The importance of education for their children has fed to a mounting pressure for more schools and this translates to the demand for more teachers. This preparation culminated in the emergence of the Bauchi State Institute of Education, Kangere.
The choice of Kangere was facilitated by the existence of a training institute for Adult and Non-Formal Education teachers there. The school has existed since 7th August 198 and had a distinguished career in the hands of a succession of dedicated managements and staffs.
The name “Institute” was retained initially in honor of the previous institution.
However, because of some confusion as to the status of the institutions, the government enacted another law changing the name to College of Education, Kangere Bauchi state in October 2016.
The functions of the college as provided in the enabling law are:
1.    To provide courses of study and research in teaching, training and preparing its students for the award of the Nigeria Certificate in Education, and other certificates and diplomas relating to such courses.
2.    To provide courses of study and research and to prepare students for the awards of certificates and diplomas.
3.    To promote through teaching, research and other means the advancement of knowledge and its practical application to the needs of the community.
4.    To erect, provide, equip and maintain libraries, laboratories, lecture halls of residences, dining halls sporting facilities and other buildings and facilities required for any of the college.
5.    To do all such other acts and things as may be incidental and conductive to its functions.
